In Cahuita, the main attractions are the beach, the reef, and the paths along which morpho butterflies, toucans and three-toed sloths appear. But a lesser-known phenomenon is no less captivating: the migration of raptors. Three million birds fly overhead between September and November, forming vortices of eagles, hawks, and owls, spiraling in search of updrafts.

The skies of Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and the entire Caribbean seaboard are filled with 17 species of raptors that migrate from the U.S. and Canada, coasting across the continent on thermal currents.

The plains narrow at this point, giving birds the choice of taking the Pacific route or passing between the Caribbean coast and the Talamanca Mountain Range.
