Tenorio National Park is located in the Volcanic Mountain Range of Guanacaste, and its singular Celeste River offers a mystical setting. This natural spectacle of crystal clear, turquoise-tinged waters looks like something one could only dream of. Legend has it that when God was painting the skies blue, he dipped his brush in the river creating the sparkling turquoise waters.

One of its highlights is the Río Celeste Waterfall, which is 30 meters high, followed by the Laguna Azul, which is a small pool of intense color.

Previously it was believed that the color of the water was due to a high concentration of sulfates, calcium carbonate and sulfur; minerals found in the water due to its proximity to the Tenorio Volcano, however, what makes the Río Celeste such an interesting place is that the color is the product of an optical phenomenon that occurs as a consequence of the aluminosilicates that cover the rocks of the bottom of the river.
